A people's organization of 320 village sangams determined to achieve self-reliance.
A land rights march held on December 5th, 1988 in Gudalur marked the birth of the Adivasi Munnetra Sangam, or as we like to call it, AMS.
With over 1,000 Adivasis in participation, this pivotal moment signalled the end of an era of suppression and fear and paved the way for social justice and self-reliance.
The Village Sangams of the AMS represents over 20,000 adivasis from the Paniya, Kattunayakan, Bettakurumab,a and Mullakuramba tribes
Impact
Since 1988, AMS has been representing the community on numerous issues. A dedicated legal team ensures that legal support and representation is no longer an inaccessible dream for the Adivasis. The highlight has been the Tribal LAnd Rights Campaign that led to reclaiming acres of lost Adivasi land. Over the years, more than 90% of the community now have access to small plots of agricultural land. AMS is also engaged with the government in ensuring that basic amenities like clean drinking water, electricity, and roads are made available to all.
The bottom line has always been that the Adivasis have the same rights and benefits as any other Indian citizen.

At present, AMS is working towards implementing the 2006 Forest Rights Acts and introducing the Adivasis's unique culture, lifestyle, and philosophy to the outside world.
